This course provides applied entrepreneurship know-how on the foundation, priorities, financing, finding the right employees, getting the word out, business development as well as entrepreneurial attributes such as commitment, determination, perseverance, goal oriented problem solving, team building. Teams of students will work on transforming an idea into a company which is ready for financing. Part of business success depends on understanding how relationships lead to other things. Hence, the course will also feature guest speakers from entrepreneurs and investors so that they share their successful as well as unsuccessful experiences which are often more valuable.

MGMT 421 / RETAIL MANAGEMENT

This course is designed to provide a comprehensive view of retail management. It follows an outline of global retailing with an emphasis on top players, different forms and channels of retail. The strategy of retailing begins with an overview and highlights the key elements of competitive advantage. These elements are then introduced and discussed individually in each chapter to provide a 360-degree view into retailing. Students will have an understanding of the components that can be seen and judged from outside ? value, location, product, service, and communication ? and an understanding of internal components ? technology, logistics and supplier relations.

This course is designed to provide a detailed understanding of merchandising theory in retail through applied business case illustrations and merchandising simulator. Following the introduction of concepts and techniques of merchandising, the topics in line planning, pricing, budgeting, implications of in-store shopping behavior, developing and presenting product lines and sourcing will be discussed.

The course aims to give a broad perspective about the businesses beyond their main focus on Profit including responsibilities of businesses towards People and Planet. The programme aims to analyse the complex factors which lead to good CSR practices in both a national and international context. With a rights based approach to CSR - from labour rights to human rights to environmental rights to anti-corruption - the course will showcase how CSR can be an integral part of corporations. At the end of the course the students will be able to complite a CSR audit and develop a CSR Project assigned in class.
